Ethnic Instruments : The Sitar

Do you know what a Sitar is? It’s part of a group of ethnic instruments that is believed to have originated in the Indian subcontinent. It has been around for 400-800 years.

The Sitar is a string instrument. The gourd of the Sitar is a pumpkin and the neck is made of a wood called Tun. Like a guitar, you use a pick of some sort, called a mizrab, to pluck the strings.

The Sitar is not easy to learn, in fact it is very difficult. The notes are far apart and the strings are hard, so you have to press down very firmly.
It is said, your fingers still hurt after years of practice. Even so, it is still a beautiful instrument. It plays music from the heart.
