the rise of digital t-shirt printing
Calculating the total number of designs applied to printed t-shirts across the globe at present is a job that would take a very long time. In today’s world we can have absolutely any image or text applied to a piece of fabric clothing, but there are some definite correlations between certain designs and how well they continue to sell.
Printed t-shirts with picture and slogan designs from retro games, technology and scientific knowledge have been incredibly popular for the past 5 years or so and they’re showing no signs of backing down.As soon as these t-shirts began to be printed they became a big hit as ‘geeks’ tend to prefer wearing this type of garment. The target consumers really love the type of humour involved in the slogans and images printed on ‘geek chic’ shirts, so it sells well. Especially now that in the 00s being a geek is not so uncool, people are much more willing to advertise the fact that they fall into that stereotype on their clothing.
Since the rise of digital t-shirt printing (a method used which can apply high resolution images onto fabric), photographs on t-shirts have become trendy too.Photographs of children, whole families and pets are the most common images to be printed. Others use digital printing as a means for humour, such as on hen and stag nights where everyone wears a photograph of the bride or groom as a baby on their clothing. While digital prints can be seen on aprons, bibs, hoodies, hats and many other clothing garments the most popular still remains the t-shirt. Another form of humorous print seen on t-shirts apart from geek chic and digital photographs is the ‘faux logo’ design. For instance, a t-shirt with font that is the same as the PayPal logo, but which says ‘GayPal’ instead. The t-shirts quite commonly use humour suitable for adults, which is why they are so popular for people in their teens and twenties.
One of the best selling garments in merchandising markets is the printed t-shirt. Everyone who’s anyone in TV, radio or the public eye will have their own printed t-shirt designs to sell as merchandise.Although it’s not just t-shirts that class as merchandise; bags, books, laptop cases, t towels and just about anything else can be printed. These promotional items are then sold after shows in the venue foyer, on market stalls, online and at festivals too.
Designers are now coming up with much more artistic designs for printed t-shirts. Quite often they feature cartoons or ‘cute’ images of animals and people, in fantasy situations. These designs can be cute and heart warming, whereas others quite often have dark or violent undertones that are aimed at being humorous. This type of printed t-shirt design has only become popular in the past 3 years or so.
Generally speaking, it is funny t-shirt designs which are the most popular in today’s market.Yet with the emergence of t-shirts having professional art and cartoons printed on them this may be set to change. This could spell a lack of humorous t-shirts and a significant rise in more emotional ones, but at this stage there is no way of knowing.Watch this space!
