The Development of Biometric Fingerprints
Quite ironically, the premise for the development of biometric fingerprints was quite faulty. Criminologists in the 19th century believed that there was such a thing as a “criminal type” and that these sorts of people could be identified through their bodily features. Of course, there is no such thing as a “criminal type”. However, the data that the criminologists gathered in order to support the theory of criminal types became the basis for the science of biometric fingerprints . Back in the day even measurements of ears were taken! Nowadays, we do not often go so far. We can however, thank the criminologists for making fingerprints a standard of criminal identification today.
